Antigua and Barbuda is an independent state ruled by British tradition where a Governor-general represents the British Queen Elizabeth II.
There are two legislative houses, the Senate with 17 seats and the House of Representatives with 17 members, directly elected from the political parties.
The legislative power practices principles from the English Common Law and the country is socially, economically and politically stable under a democratic government elected since its independence.
The judicial power has complete autonomy and it is shared with other five eastern Caribbean states.
The Labour Party of Antigua had governed since its independence in November 1981. There is only one opposite party, the United Progressive Party, which rules the country at present since the last elections held on 26th March, 2004. |
